The archive search room is generally open from Monday to Friday 10am until 5pm. However booking is essential as we are often called to other tasks and activities. It is always best to book visits a few weeks in advance at least. If you are planning to visit for a week or two, it is best to arrange your booking a month in advance.

If you are new to using archive material we are more than happy to talk you through the search procedures and search room guidelines. If you get in touch with us in advance we can give you an idea of the types of records we hold.

The main points to remember if you haven’t used an archive search room before are that you can’t bring food or drink into the search room and you are not allowed to use pens. Otherwise you are free to bring cameras and laptops, and there are services for photocopying documents and ordering copies from bound volumes. Remember to bring pencils and some spare change in case you would like to copy documents.

There are plenty of power points and we have wireless internet connection, and our online catalogue is accessible via a computer in the search room.

We have lockers for safe storage of your bags and personal items, and there is plenty of seating in the rest of the building and outside for you to have an enjoyable lunch. The museum’s café is open daily throughout the summer with a range of local and freshly cooked foods, and freshly ground coffees.
