The Telegraph Museum Porthcurno holds an estimated 10,000 photographs in its Archive, ranging in date from the 1850’s to the present day. The subjects of these photographs include telegraph stations around the world, telegraph staff, cable ships, events, and equipment. They provide an insight into life at that time, showing people’s working lives as well as the more social aspects. The photographs form part of the museum’s designated collection, recognised as being of national and international importance.
In collaboration with the Cornwall Museums Partnership and with funding from Arts Council England, the Telegraph Museum Porthcurno has spent the last three years digitising a selection of its large photograph collection. With the help of enthusiastic volunteers, we have now catalogued and digitised 6000 photographs, many of which have never been seen before.
