Enter our community photography competition

The Telegraph Museum Porthcurno are delighted to launch an exciting new photography competition – this is your chance to be exhibited in a brand new exhibition held in our unique World War 2 tunnels!

All entries will feature in a special community exhibition in a new gallery within our unique World War Two Tunnels in May. Winning entries will be framed and displayed in the exhibition, and other great prizes are still to be announced.

This is your chance to show your creative response to the valley at Porthcurno and the changes that have taken place within the landscape since the telegraph station began in the late 1800’s. Use your creative eye to capture something seldom seen and explore the museum and surrounding habitat to win a fantastic prize!

We’ve got four different categories – decide which best suits your style of photography and submit an entry. We must limit entries to one entry per person. The competition is open to all ages. As a funded Community Photography Competition, we are looking for entries from residents of Cornwall only.

The winner of each category will win:

* An Adventure Pro HD 1080p Action Sports Cam
* A mounted section of genuine telegraph cable retrieved from the sea bed off Porthcurno, with certificate of authenticity
* A copy of the award winning booklet “Changing Places – Porthcurno & the roots of modern communication” (winner of Best Booklet at the Holyer an Gof 2017 Publishers’ Awards)
* Free meal for two at the museum café (max value £30)

Closing date: 8pm on Sunday 8 April 2018

Winners announced on Facebook: 11am Monday 16 April 2018

Each category is open to all ages and we encourage our younger entrants to give the grownups a run for their money! We also want to embolden the older generations to show the kids how its done.

  1. Black and White

What we are looking for:

We would like to see an image with great contrast, from the deepest black to the brightest white, and some lovely tonal ranges in between. The light in Porthcurno is something special no matter what time of year. From the misty, drizzly days to the bright, stark sunny days. Show us a photograph that captures some monotone character.

  1. Colour

What we are looking for:

We would like to see an image that takes full advantage of the colour found within Porthcurno Valley. From the turquoise seas, granite cliffs, lush green vegetation, to the amazing technology found in the Museum itself. You might want to focus on one colour in particular, or maybe your photograph will be a spectrum of hues.

  1. Abstract

What we are looking for:

We would like you to look for something really different, something seldom seen. What do you notice when you visit the Valley and the Museum? What do you see that no one else does? From the angular lines of Eastern House to the random tidelines and shoreline textures, we want you to use your creative eye and compose something really different.

  1. Recreate a scene from one of our historic photographs

What we are looking for:

Choose one of the three photographs chosen from our Photographic Archive and recreate that scene! For anyone who loves getting in front of the lens, the wackier the better.  Use the props and dressing up costumes in the museum to dress up your friends and family to win that top prize!

The photos you can choose from for this category are:

  1. Hat Dancing, Archive No: PHO///8704
  2. Smiles and Flowers, Archive No: PHO///9656

3. On the Phone, Archive No: PHO///8712

Most importantly, for all categories we want your photos to show your connection to our Valley. Since the start of the Telegraph Station in the 1800’s and long before, people have been drawn to this location and have stayed. What do you enjoy doing here? What is your connection? Show us what makes Porthcurno yours.
